What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis can be used therapeutically, for example to alleviate anxiety or change behavior. Hypnosis is a state of focused attention that utilizes a relaxed state of consciousness. It is not a sleep-like trance, but rather a state between wakefulness and sleep, in which the subconscious mind is particularly receptive to correction.
What does hypnosis feel like?
During hypnosis, many people experience a feeling of relaxation and lightness. They often feel calm and at the same time very alert. Some describe it as a "floating" sensation or a state of deep relaxation in which thoughts are generally not controlled by the mind, but by feelings, and can therefore slow down.
Difference between hypnosis and trance
Hypnosis is a state that alters conscious experience. Trance, on the other hand, is the state induced by hypnosis. One can also be in a trance without being consciously hypnotized, for example, during meditation or when "immersed" in an activity that requires a high level of concentration.
Can you hear anything when you're hypnotized?
Yes, everything. Even during hypnosis, you perceive sounds, although you are often less distracted or find them less disturbing. The perception of external stimuli may be reduced during hypnosis, but you generally remain receptive to voices, such as that of the hypnotherapist.
Will I sleep during hypnosis? Or what happens if I fall asleep?
You don't sleep in the traditional sense. Hypnosis is a state of focused attention and relaxation. If you fall asleep during hypnosis, you don't lose the connection to the session, but the therapeutic process may be less effective. The subconscious mind becomes less receptive during sleep. Generally, you can be gently nudged back into hypnotic activity, or you can sleep until your body naturally awakens.
Can everyone be hypnotized?
Only those who are willing to participate will be able to hypnotize. It won't work against a person's will. Most people can be put into a hypnotic state, as everyone is hypnotizable to a different degree. However, some people are less receptive to hypnosis due to certain factors (such as very strong resistance or mental blocks).
Do I have to believe in the efficacy of hypnosis for it to work?
It helps to have a positive attitude (openness) towards hypnosis, but it's not absolutely necessary to benefit from it. Some people who are initially skeptical still experience very positive results and benefit from above-average recovery.
